Falklands War vets to lay wreath in Droitwich on 1,000 mile cycle

Droitwich Editorial 6th May, 2024   0

A GROUP of Falklands War veterans on a cycling journey from Lands End to John o’ Groats will be stopping to lay a wreath at Droitwich’s Victoria Square memorial.

The 21 cyclists, all aged 60 and over, are taking on a 1,000 mile riding journey over 15 days to raise money for Parkinson’s UK charity.

After ‘obligatory’ photos at Land’s End, the group will begin pedaling on May 18.

In remembrance of those who gave up their lives, the group will host formal wreath laying’s at five points along the journey. First and last will be at either ends of the United Kingdom with three other laying’s along the way.

On day 5 (May 22), the laying will be at Droitwich Falklands Memorial scheduled for 6pm alongside Droitwich Royal British Legion. There will be two wreath laying’s later on in Lockerbie at the Ukrainian Prisoner of War Chapel and the Air Disaster Memorial.

By the end of the arduous journey, the cyclists will have completed 1,018 miles and climbed 61,140 feet of elevation – more than twice the height of Mount Everest.

The Falklands Forty Group, which formed in recognition of the 40th anniversary of the Falklands War in 2022, are encouraging members of the public to join in for sections of the ride or cheer them on where possible.

Ahead of the project, the group has aimed to raise £4,000 to help with costs of the ride and help raise vital funds. At the time we went to press, the fund has raised £3,888.

A spokesperson for the group said: “Our aim is to promote Comradeship, Endurance & Endeavour.

“Through the ethos these veterans organise and promote cycling as a means to keeping in touch and stay fit and healthy in their advancing years.

“Sadly, it is for much more than that, as for some, still lingering in their thoughts are the traumas and horrific events that all wars inevitably bring.

“Cycling as a group seems to temporarily quieten those thoughts.

“Additionally with a nod to the Falklands conflict and current struggles in Ukraine, the group aims to show how fortunate we are in the UK to have the freedom to enjoy our beautiful land.

“A massive thanks to everyone who has supported the group to make the ride possible and to raise vital funds for Parkinson’s charity. This is the Freedom Ride.”
