Family tradition as Scott takes to the stage at Droitwich's Norbury Theatre 60 years after his gran appeared in the same play there

DROITWICH’S Norbury Theatre will be carrying on a family tradition next week when one of the cast members takes to the stage in the same play his grandmother was in, more than 60 years ago.

Scott Drew, from Worcester, will play the part of Fred Dyson in the upcoming production of ‘When We are Married’, a play written by ‘An Inspector Calls’ author JB Priestley.

His grandmother Ann Webb played the part of Annie Parker in the 1955 production by the SAMA theatre group.

Scott, a bricklayer, was surprised by the revelation from his grandmother, who had kept the theatre programme and script all these years later.

The 27-year-old said: “I have never done a show before and never even been to the theatre.

“I took my girlfriend along to the auditions and the director Ian Thompson kindly asked me if I wanted to read. I put on a Yorkshire accent and was given the part of Fred.

“I am really close to my gran and when I told her about the part she said ‘oh, I was in that play’ and she gave me advice on what to do and the different ways to learn lines.

“She still does the odd play at the local church and she can sing, shes still very active.”

Set in West Riding, Yorkshire, ‘When We are Married’ is a classic farce following three couples celebrating their silver wedding anniversary after getting married on the same day 25 years ago.

The planned celebrations are soon put on hold as they discover their marriages were never official, news that could ruin their status around town.

Scott added: “I never thought I would be doing something like this but I am really excited.

“I have really enjoyed the experience and would love to do more plays in the future.”

‘When We are Married’ will be performed at the Norbury theatre in Droitwich from March 15 to 17 and 22 to 24 at 7.30pm.
