Final historic buildings walk around Droitwich Spa to take place next Saturday

Tristan Harris 17th Sep, 2017   0

THE FINAL walk of 2017 around Droitwich’s historic timber framed buildings will take place next Sunday, September 24.

The guided tour with Lyn Blewitt will last an-hour-and-a-half and start at 2.30pm outside Priory House in Friar Street before moving along the road to the High Street.

The walk follows and is based on the ‘Historic Droitwich’ Heritage Lottery Project which ran from October 2013 to March this year.

During that time group members and volunteers carried out research into documentary evidence and professional historians, along with a dendrochronologist (tree-ring dating specialist) and an archaeologist who all undertook specialised investigations.

All the gleaned information has been combined to give a more complete picture of the original date and development through the centuries of a number of timber-framed properties along Droitwich’s Friar Street and High Street.

Among them are Droitwich’s oldest identified timber-framed building which dates back to 1340 and the first Wealden style building known to be constructed in Worcestershire. No other buildings of that kind have been found in the county to date.

The walk next Sunday is free although donations towards the ongoing cost of maintaining the group’s website would be welcome.

Anyone wanting to book a place should call Claire Lloyd on 01905 771865 or with Lyn on 01905 458903.
