A WARNING has gone out to young people about cycling safety after a top fire chief had a near miss with a young rider on the A38 in Bromsgrove yesterday.

Robert Allen, the Group Commander for the Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, Tweeted The Standard with the shocking dashcam footage, along with details of what happened.

He wrote: “I wasn’t sure whether to post this but if it stops a child from being killed on the road it’s worth it!

“Today a child rode out in front of me, across the dual track, without looking!

“Thankfully I was driving under the speed limit and reacted quickly!”

He also Tweeted the hastag #neverchanceit

It is hoped any young people seeing the footage will take heed of the warning and that parents of children who will be out on their bikes over the school summer holidays will pass the message on.

Mr Allen said afterwards: “It’s perfect summer holiday weather for kids to be enjoying being out and about on their bikes – but I shared this footage to reinforce the messages about staying safe and being vigilant while cycling on, or crossing over, main roads, and also wearing a cycling helmet.

“Whatever your age, make the most of summer cycling, but keep it safe on the bikes.”

It is hoped any young people seeing the footage will take heed of the warning and that parents of children who will be out on their bikes over the school summer holidays will pass the message on.
