Foodbank is Laura’s gift to the Spa

A DROITWICH teacher has launched a festive foodbank appeal in a bid to ensure no one in the Spa goes hungry this Christmas.

After buying and wrapping all her presents early this year Laura McCullough, of Colford Close, has decided to use her time to help the less fortunate.

The 26-year-old dropped off her first load of donations to Droitwich Foodbank yesterday (Thursday) after receiving an overwhelming response since she launched the drive two-weeks-ago.

A number of businesses have been helping Laura by acting as collection points including Chessgrove Swim in Hanbury, The Beauty Room in Wychbold, Droitwich Sports Centre, SN Finance Service Limited, Gorgeous Hair Design, the Westcroft pub and The Star and Garter.

So far Laura has received a number of boxes full of seasonal food including chocolate selection boxes, advent calendars and mince pies, along with regular items, such as cans of soup, UHT milk and cereal.

Laura, who works at Chessgrove Swim, said one of her colleagues asked ‘what she was going to do with herself now her Christmas shopping was out of the way’ and she thought she would do something to benefit local people.

“I love Christmas, it is my favourite time of year.

“I was wrapping presents for my family, like chocolates and biscuits, and I thought some people do not have this.

“It is not going to make their problems any better but it will give them the nice foods they might have to sacrifice to live day by day.”

A lot of people responded to a post Laura put on Facebook about her festive foodbank appeal, with many saying they would donate and businesses offering to provide drop-off points.

She added she was planning to do a couple more drop-offs before Christmas and hoped the donations would spread some festive cheer.

“It is the local people who are helping out by donating so it would be nice to help the local people in need.” she added.

Laura said she had encouraged people to do buy one get one free offers so they did not have to spend as much and added all donations, no matter how small, made a difference.

All donations must be non-perishable and have a long shelf life.
