Four-day St Richard's Canal Festival gets under way today

Harry Leach 3rd May, 2019

HISTORICAL re-enactments, live music, stalls and a duck race all feature in Droitwich this bank holiday weekend when the popular St Richard’s Canal Festival returns to the Spa.

The family event at Vines Park will run from today until Monday, May 6.

It celebrates the patron saint of Droitwich, St Richard de Wych, and this year marks the 46th anniversary since the start of the restoration of Droitwich Canals.

Local choirs, bands and soloists will perform on the marquee stage, there will be real ale on offer and market stalls providing clothing, fruit and veg, children’s toys and community stalls offering life advice.

The dog show will return as will the annual ‘Blessing of the Upwich Brine Pit’ at 10.15am tomorrow and the ‘Great Droitwich Duck Race’ at 4.30pm on Monday afternoon.

Steve Knight, marketing and events officer at Wychavon District Council, said: “The St Richard’s Canal Festival is always an eagerly awaited event in our tourism calendar.

“It offers fun for all the family and is a great opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Droitwich Spa and celebrate the canal as one of the town’s great assets.”

A large display of boats, including historic static engines, will be moored on the canal in Vines Park, as well as the all new ‘Pamela May ll’ which will be operating trips throughout the weekend.

This year’s event is organised by Worcester, Birmingham and Droitwich Canals Society with the help of Wychavon District Council.
