Four-day St Richards Festival gets under way in Droitwich today

Droitwich Editorial 28th Apr, 2017   0

THE POPULAR St Richards Festival returns to the town at 5pm today (Friday) with a parade and brine pit blessing service tomorrow (Saturday).

The parade, organised by The Probus ‘87 Club of Droitwich Spa, starts at 10am from Victoria Square and finishes at the Upwich Pit in Vines Park for the Blessing Service at 10.30am. It re-enacts the ‘miracle’ from 1248 when Richard de Wych, the Droitwich-born Bishop of Chichester, made the brine flow again, saving the town as it could make salt again.

This year the normal ‘sacred’ route from St Andrew’s Church to the Upwich Pit, could not be taken because of the redevelopment work in the High Street.

The four-day festival runs until 5pm on bank holiday Monday (May 1) and features canal boats and rides, a real ale bar, catering village, live entertainment, vintage cars and more.

Jammersley Entertainment presents a host of activities on different activities – ‘boating’ on Saturday, ‘Sport’ on Sunday and ‘animals’ on Monday.

The Farmers’ Market will be on in Victoria Square tomorrow (Saturday) and there will be the classic and vintage cars all day Saturday.

There will be nature walks at 10.30am and 2pm on Sunday. Meet at the ‘Duck Race’ gazebo by the canal in Vines Park.

On Monday there is a dog show from 11am with classes – £2 per class to enter – running every half hour. There will be rosettes for 1st to 4th place, along with trophies for Best in Show and Reverse Best in Show.

There is also the Great Droitwich Duck Race in Vines Park at 4.30pm.
