WORCESTERSHIRE County Council is working towards introducing zero emission buses as part of a national Government scheme.
The Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) scheme is providing up to £120million to Local Transport Authorities, outside London, to support the vehicles’ introduction and infrastructure needed to support them.
The county council successfully expressed an interest in receiving funding, as part of this scheme, and has now been asked to prepare a full business case for investment.
Coun Alan Amos, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Highways and Transport, said it was a fantastic scheme the authority would like to see in Worcestershire to support its ambitions to provide good quality, innovative, best value services.
“As a council, we’re committed to reducing the amount of carbon we produce, and we know that the transport sector is one area where improvements can be made.
“I’m delighted we have been chosen to develop this latest project, we have put forward”
The proposed extent of the ZEBRA scheme within Worcestershire would initially cover the Bromsgrove and Redditch districts.
The Government, committing to decarbonisation, wants to roll-out of the 4,000 Zero Emission Buses across the country to reduce the transport sector’s CO2 contribution.
Bus manufacturers and other related suppliers would be supported in developing the zero emission bus technology and innovative ways would be provided to overcome the challenges of introducing zero emission buses and supporting infrastructure.
