FUNDING has been secured for a major new crossing on the A38 in Droitwich at the roundabout near the Westlands estate and Roman Way.
The £1million scheme – to make the main road safer for everyone who uses it – has been made possible by funding from Worcestershire County Council, Wychavon District Council and Active Travel England.
It is being hailed as a major boost towards improving walking and cycling provision.
Coun Richard Morris ran an online petition, gathering more than 370 signatures.
He said: “It is excellent news – it has taken longer than I had hoped but this is significant progress in supporting one of my main county election promises. Safety must come first!.”
He praised the help of Coun Mike Rouse, Worcestershire’s cabinet member for Highways, Nigel Huddleston MP and the county council for all their support.
Coun Rouse said: “The crossing is important because it connects an important estate with employment opportunities, with residents currently risking it by dashing across one of the arms of the roundabout.
“This crossing will be cycle-friendly, wheelchair friendly and a boost for pedestrians.
“The issues at this location were first raised to me by Coun Morris.
“He asked how we could unlock this scheme as the cost meant it unable to progress.
“We enlisted the support of Nigel Huddleston MP who pulled together key stakeholders.
“At one point, Nigel, Richard and I were going to knock the doors of the businesses in the area. We were determined.
“My thanks to all involved, and especially Coun Richard Morris – thanks also to everyone who signed his petition.”
