Future Droitwich doctor shows way on stem cells

AN ASPIRING Droitwich doctor is doing his part to save lives in more than one way by encouraging people to donate stem cells.

Edward Cook, of Bagehott Road, wants others to follow his lead by signing up to the bone marrow register.

The 21-year-old said he was studying medical science at the University of Birmingham last year when he decided to register with the charity Marrow, which acts on behalf of Anthony Nolan.

Edward, who will be starting at Manchester Medical School in September, said he was apprehensive at first because he had heard the procedure could be very painful but his actual experience was far from that.

He said to sign-up all you had to do was to spit in a cup, no blood was needed unless you were found as a potential match.

There are two ways to donate – the traditional method is to be put under anaesthetic and have your bone marrow extracted from your hip.

But the other way involved having injections for four days prior to the procedure, to increase the number of stem cells in your blood which are then removed with a cannula.

“Although it was uncomfortable it was not painful, but if you are donating it means you have been matched with someone who needs your specific stem cells to save their life so it worth it.” he said.

He added he met a man who was donating for the first time despite being on the register for 25 years.

He said: “I want to become a doctor in future years and I thought it would be hypocritical of myself not to sign up if I was hoping others would do so for my potential future patients.

“I also thought what would I want others to do if one of my family members needed a stem cell and bone marrow transplant.”

“It you do not have the stem cells, you do not have them, and if people do not get them they will die.

“It is not much effort for me to donate my stem cells and it can save someone’s life and make a real difference.”
