Government's u-turn on rail ticket office closures welcomed by Wychavon leader

WYCHAVON District Council has welcomed the news of the government’s u-turn on rail station ticket office closures.

The council was one of six local authorities across Worcestershire to campaign against the closure of ticket offices in their region and are now ‘delighted’ the government has scrapped the plans.

Concerns were raised by Wychavon and other district councils in Worcestershire about the proposals. The council expressed concerns about the impact of the changes on users of rail services in the county, including tourists and the personal safety of all travellers.

News of the u-turn came when Transport Secretary Mark Harper said the government had asked train operators to withdraw their proposals because they failed to meet high passenger standards.

Councillor Christoper Day, Leader of Wychavon District Council, said: “The right decision has been made here, for our businesses, residents and tourists, and I am delighted with the result.

“In an age where we are encouraging people to make use of public transport, it needs to be as easy as possible to travel. The public has been heard, and I am delighted that Wychavon was part of the process.”
