Ground-breaking Droitwich dementia project to celebrate its first year

Droitwich Editorial 5th Nov, 2016   0

A GROUND-BREAKING project aimed at dementia patients will celebrate the success of its first year at the Droitwich Spa Meeting Centre.

The event will be held from 1.30pm to 3pm at the Community Hall, Heritage Way, on November 25 with refreshments beforehand at 1pm.

The project, based on a tried and tested ‘Dutch model’, was launched by the University of Worcester, and is supported by the Alzheimer’s Society and the EU’s JNPD Programme (Neurodegenerative Disease Research).

Over the last 12 months, the Meeting Centre has provided support to people living with dementia and their carers.

Regular visitors have taken part in ‘reminiscence activities,’ based on music, news and sporting events to trigger memories and help recall life’s poignant moments.

There have also been cognitive stimulation sessions and activities like singing, dancing, and holistic therapies such as tai chi.

The one-year anniversary celebrations will provide a chance to hear first hand stories from members about their experiences at the centre, and about how the service could be embedded in the local community as a long-term sustainable practice.
