THE STATION Commander at Droitwich Fire Station’s training centre will be heading to Downing Street today (Friday) for the 2015 Spirit of Fire Awards.
Martin Lown has been shortlisted for his fund-raising efforts with The Fire Fighters Charity, helping Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) raise almost £90,000. He has taken part in countless car washes, fire engine pulls, rows and cycling campaigns.
In a bid to raise even more money, Martin also tackled some of the world’s highest mountains including Kilimanjaro, Mt Everest Base Camp and Mt Toubkal in North Africa, which he climbed in full fire kit, raising over £12,000 in the process.
Today’s awards ceremony, hosted by BBC newsreader Nicholas Owen, gives recognition to individuals from the fire and rescue sevice and to members of the public for bravery and dedication to The Fire Fighters Charity.
Funded entirely through donations, the Fire Fighters Charity provides invaluable support and rehabilitation services to members of the fire service community during their times of need.
Martin took up the voluntary role of Service Coordinator in 2012 and has been shortlisted for the Supporter of the Year category, which goes to individuals who have given exceptional support and outstanding dedication to the charity.
Chief Fire Officer Mark Yates said: “I’m delighted Martin’s hard work has been recognised with this nomination.
“On a personal and professional level, Martin has shown tremendous dedication, passion and exceptional commitment to the charity and has played a part in ensuring that they continue to provide an outstanding level of support.”
Martin said: “It’s an absolute honour to be nominated for this award and I’m looking forward to representing HWFRS.
“The charity does some incredible work and I’m immensely proud to be able to contribute towards that.”
After a special reception at Downing Street, the finalists will head down to a hotel in Westminster for the ceremony where the winners will be revealed.
A host of celebrity guests will be presenting the awards, including Russell Howard, John Partridge and Nick Miles.
