‘HEARTLESS’ thieves have stolen an historic artefact from a church in Upton Warren causing damage to the Grade II listed building.

The 18th century flute and its presentation case, which were gifted to the church in 1934 by Mary Ellen Willett, were ripped off the wall of St Michael’s Church in Upton Warren.

Mrs Willett was the great, great granddaughter of the parishioner Thomas Hyde, who played the instrument.

The damage has since been repaired however the theft has caused the parishioners and vicar of the church to make the difficult decision of closing the building to visitors unless a church service or arranged event is taking place.

Alan Pugh, who’s responsible for maintenance of the church, has described the theft as ‘soul destroying’.

He said: “The flute and case has great historic value and the church have a duty to display it. The parishioners are so upset, it’s very disheartening.

“It’s difficult enough having to maintain the Grade II listed building, never mind having to make repairs after vandals strike.

“The tough decision to close the church will impact many visitors, including those who may want to seek a quiet place of peace and tranquility in these difficult times.”

Church representatives have urged anyone with information about the theft or the whereabouts of the flute and case to contact police on 101 (Police reference No. 00155-1-22062203).
