THE HUSBAND of much-loved Wychbold community champion Helga Peeters who lost her brave battle with cancer two years ago has written a book about their experience from the moment she was diagnosed until she passed away.

Justin Bowen has based the book on all of the Facebook posts Helga and he had shared about their family’s cancer journey.

At the time they found it the best way to keep everyone updated about how the fight was going.

Helga lived with breast cancer for more than three years before she died on August 5, 2019.

During her life, as well as her family and the Wychbold Fudge business the pair launched, she devoted so much time to her community and her funeral at St Mary de Wyche Church was attended by more than 200 people.

The pair’s children Bren and Seren were seven and five at the time and as the weeks went by, Justin reflected on what had happened and the questions the children would ask.

He decided to print out all the Facebook posts and put them together in a folder with the idea that one day – if the children wanted to know the whole story – they could read it as it happened.

As he told friends and family about the project some of them asked for copies of the completed set.

He said: “It then became clear that others might be interested in our story too, so the little project became a big project.

“I wanted to turn all of those Facebook posts into a proper, published book.”

With the help of Alison at Alison Keys Creative, who created the beautiful design for the book, that project has now reached its goal.

Justin added: “Some 18 months and one pandemic on from when the little project started, Fighting for this Life: Our Cancer Journey has now been published on Amazon.

“The children are hugely excited about the story of their mum being published, although we also shed tears together when the proof copy arrived.

“It’s been an emotional rollercoaster, but also hugely helpful as I build a new life with the children.

“I hope if people are going through a cancer journey themselves or have lost someone to the illness, they too can get something from the book.”

Part of the proceeds from the sales will go to St Richard’s Hospice as a thank you for the wonderful support the family received from Sue Sharp, the charity’s secondary breast care nurse.
