A NEW Iceland store has opened in Droitwich, creating more than 20 new jobs.

Iceland Foods opened its doors to the new store in St Andrews Square Shopping Centre on Tuesday (April 21).

It is estimated that an extra 22 jobs will be created as a result of the new store.

To celebrate the new store opening, Iceland gave away £1,500 worth of vouchers to the first 150 customers in the queue.

The new store will be open between 8am and 6pm between Monday and Saturday, and 10am until 4pm on Sundays.

Poundland, which used to occupy the building, closed in December.

A spokesperson for the discount chain said the Droitwich closure happened due to a lease expiry, with Poundland continuing a programme to ‘simplify its retail network’ around its ‘best-performing sites.’

Following the announcement, Wychavon Council leader Coun Richard Morris said the closure of Poundland should not be seen as a loss of confidence in Droitwich Town Centre.

Linzi Mcfarlane, Store Manager at Iceland Foods, Droitwich, said: “We’re so pleased to welcome shoppers to our brand-new Iceland store. Everyone was so excited for the grand opening – people started queuing from 5:30am.

“If you haven’t been down yet, make sure to check out our brand-new store and get your hands on some unmissable deals.”
