Ideas wanted for new Droitwich arts project

Droitwich Editorial 27th Feb, 2024   0

PLANS have been unveiled to create two new pieces of public artwork in Droitwich Spa town centre and residents have the chance to get involved.

The murals will be installed at Emms Haberdashery and The Talbot with one of them reflecting the town’s history and heritage while the other will have a more flexible theme.

A four-week public consultation has been launched to gather views and ideas from residents about what they would like to see featured in the murals.

Ideas submitted as part of the consultation will be used during a series of focus groups with specific community groups and organisations to help the chosen artists come up with designs.

It is expected the artwork will be installed by April next year.

The project is a joint effort between Wychavon and Droitwich Spa Place Board. It is being funded through Wychavon’s share of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, part of the Government’s Levelling Up Agenda.

Once installed, the artwork will support the popular Droitwich Spa Underpass Art Project which saw seven underpasses turned into works of art the community helped create.

Matt Nicol, chair of Droitwich Spa Place Board, said: “We’re committed to making the high street a focus for the town and I’m really excited to hear what residents suggest for these two key locations, which will link nicely with the festoon lighting which was installed last year.”

Councillor Richard Morris, executive board member for Economic Growth and Tourism on Wychavon District Council, said:

“These artworks will be a fantastic addition to the high street and provide another reason to come and explore all our wonderful town has to offer.

“The success of the Droitwich Underpass Art Project was built on the involvement of the community, so I urge people to get involved and help us create something amazing for our town centre.”

Visit www.wychavon.gov.uk/DroitwichStreetArt to take part in the consultation. The deadline for responses is Sunday, March 24.
