Illegal traveller encampment at Briar Mill leads to Droitwich Leisure Centre being forced to close

Droitwich Editorial 22nd Mar, 2018   0

DROITWICH Leisure Centre has been forced to close after travellers flocked to the car park last night, setting up an illegal encampment.

The town’s Safer Neighbourhood Team confirmed a Section 61 Police Notice was issued on the unauthorised encampment to leave by 2pm tomorrow (Friday) or else face court action.

Police Constable Rich Rees moved to reassure the public they would be moved on as soon as possible and officers would continue to provide a high visibility presence in the area surrounding the Briar Mill site.

Droitwich Spa Leisure Centre and The Lido took to Facebook to announced the closure.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances the centre will be closed on Thursday.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and are working tirelessly to re-open as soon as possible.”

Vic Allison, Deputy Managing Director for Wychavon District Council, said: “We received a report just before 9.20pm on Wednesday that travellers had moved on to the Droitwich Leisure Centre site.

“In conjunction with the police an order has been issued to the group requiring them to leave the site by 2pm on Friday (March 23).

“If they fail to do so then further action will be taken.”
