CROWDS flocked to Droitwich over the bank holiday weekend as the St Richard’s Canal Festival made its long-awaited return.
The event – organised by The Worcester-Birmingham and Droitwich Canals Society with support from Wychavon District Council and Droitwich Town Council – saw a variety of entertainment and activities take place from April 30 to May 2, including real ale bars, music and boat trips.
It culminated on Monday afternoon with The Great Droitwich Duck Race which completely sold out and raised £1,000 for the canal society.
The charity is in the process of restoring its community narrowboat Cecilia to its former glory.
Work already carried out includes repairs, a new floor – totalling £10,000, removing bedrooms and installing seating so children and young people have a space to carry out their activities during trips.
The next stage will be to have the boat – which is staffed entirely by the society’s volunteers – repainted.
Tony Brannon, a member of The Worcester-Birmingham and Droitwich Canals Society committee said: “The festival went really well – as well as the duck race selling out, the entertainment was spot-on.
“We have already booked two of the bands for next year’s event and it we are now ‘full steam ahead’ with planning for St Richard’s Festival 2023.”
