THE leader of Wychavon has paid a touching tribute to England legend Kevin Keegan.
The star, who opened the new Droitwich Spa FC ground in 2022, passed away aged 75 on Monday.
Keegan cut the ribbon in front of Droitwich fans, having toured the club’s facilities shortly after his arrival, to officially mark the Saltmen’s return to their hometown after four years playing in Stourport.
During his visit, Keegan said: “This pitch would have been like Wembley when I was playing at this level.
“A lot of league clubs would look at this and think wow.
“We didn’t have facilities like these when I was at Scunthorpe – the floodlights are better!”
Wychavon leader Coun Richard Morris attended the opening event back in 2022.
He said: “It is really sad to hear the death of Kevin Keegan.
“Keegan had a special connection to the area, visiting in November 2022 to officially open the new ground and stand at Droitwich Spa F.C. at the King George Playing Fields.
“It was a terrific event where Kevin talked of his great footballing stories and memories.”
