FORMER England manager Kevin Keegan officially opened Droitwich Spa’s King George Playing Fields Ground earlier this week (November 10).

Keegan cut the ribbon in front of Droitwich fans, having toured the club’s facilities shortly after his arrival, to officially mark the Saltmen’s return to their hometown after four years playing in Stourport.

And Keegan then hosted an after dinner event in the club’s Pavilion bar whilst Coun George Duffy was also in attendance.

Keegan said: “This pitch would have been like Wembley when I was playing at this level.

“A lot of league clubs would look at this and think wow.

“We didn’t have facilities like these when I was at Scunthorpe – the floodlights are better!”

A two-time Ballon d’Or winner during his playing days, Keegan treated around 85 guests to memories and stories from his days as a player and manager.

Alongside Keegan’s visit, Droitwich’s MND warrior John Adams completed a mile-long circuit around the perimeter of the pitch to raise funds and awareness for the MND (Motor Neurone Disease) Association.

Fans were also welcome to take pictures with replicas of the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup trophies.
