KIND-HEARTED students from Droitwich Spa High School have held their annual Senior Citizens’ Christmas Party for older people living near the school.
This year’s was the 15th anniversary of the event which is always organised and hosted by those in year nine and features a full turkey dinner with all the trimmings, carol-singing present-giving and mince pie eating.
Elizabeth Whitehouse, who oversaw the party, said it was the highlight of the winter term and was so important for both our students and the school’s senior neighbours.
“There are very few opportunities in which teenagers get a chance to interact with older members of the community beyond their own family, so this is a great way for them to demonstrate that the image that is presented of teenagers is not always a fair one.
“The school has a well-deserved reputation for being well integrated into the wider community and this is one of the key events in our calendar.
“The students get so much out of the event and always comment afterwards how much they have enjoyed it and how much they learn from their guests.”
This year there were 20 women and eight men – the highest number of male guests to date – who were entertained by the school’s rock gospel choir and madrigal group before the dinner.
Each guest was also presented with a gift donated by students of the school.
