Lack of street lights in Droitwich continue to spark concerns

A DROITWICH councillor is ‘deeply concerned’ over the lack of lighting in areas of the town which he believes will only become a bigger issue as winter sets in.
Coun Alan Humphries (Lab) responded to the complaints of worried residents who said it was so dark at Vines Park between the Gardeners Arms pub and St George’s playing fields people were having to go out with torches when walking their dogs.
Coun Humphries went to look for himself and commented: “There are areas which have lights but the trees are so overgrown no light can come through.
“As I walked through it was like something out of a film when one of the lights went out just as I was under it.
“Other parts have no lighting at all.”
The issue of street lighting arose after he took his concern at the lack of subway light to Worcestershire County Council who promised to get the lights which were in place working again.
However on his walk through on Friday (October 21) he noticed the work still has not been completed.
“I am getting more and more worried as time goes on. The clocks go back this Sunday (October 30) and it will start to get dark by 5pm.
“This problem really needs to be sorted before winter takes hold.”
The County Council said work is still going on in some areas of the subway. The council says it does not have responsibility for all of Vines Park but will get in touch with Coun Humphries to ensure the parts which come under their control have adequate lighting.
The spokesman added: “The issue with the lighting at the Ombersley Street (Saltway) subway has been successfully resolved.
“The two subways at Briar Mill and Ombersley Way have a fault with the feeder pillar, and we are working with Western Power Distribution to resolve the issue within the next few weeks.
“The majority of Vines Park does not fall within the responsibility of the Highways Authority, but we’ll check the two streetlights that fall within our remit to ensure that they are not obstructed.
