HISTORIC England and structural engineers commissioned by Wychavon District Council will visit the Raven Hotel in Droitwich tomorrow (Tuesday).
The building was destroyed by fire on Sunday evening with the blaze still burning into the early hours of Monday morning.
Police believe the fire was started deliberately and arrested two girls, aged 13 and 14, on suspicion of arson.
The structural engineer will liaise with Wychavon’s Head of Building Control who has been on-site all-day, working with the fire service.
Coun Richard Morris, who provided the update, said: “There are legal steps to follow both in terms of the Listed Building Act and Building Control Act.
“Once we have the view of the structural engineer and conservation input we can look at next steps.”
Wychavon District Council – Statement
Earlier today, Wychavon District Council made this statement, saying it had been working hard on ensuring urgent works were carried out – these were due to be completed this week.
The statement added: “The council shares the community’s upset and anger regarding the devastating fire at the Raven Hotel in Droitwich, as has been expressed by members of the Council’s leadership in press interviews today.
“We understand completely the strength of feeling and affection for this historic building and the significance it has for the town.
“Over the last six months we had been working hard to ensure that urgent works were carried out to protect the building in line with the court order we secured earlier this year. These works were due to finish this week and we will still invoice the owner for payment.
“We are working closely with the fire service and our building control officers were visiting the site this morning to review the building and advise of the next steps.
“We will issue a further statement very soon, once we have an update regarding the state and safety of the structure.
“We would also express our gratitude for the support of the fire service and police over the last 18 hours in dealing with this situation.”
Statement from Nigel Huddleston, MP for Droitwich and Evesham
Mr Huddleston said yesterday on social media: “An incredibly sad day for Droitwich.
“It was heartbreaking to see a devastating fire destroy the iconic Raven Hotel in Droitwich this evening.
“So many local residents have fond memories of time spent in this historic building.
“The emergency services are doing an outstanding job trying to contain the fire and keep people safe.
“It is unclear what – if any parts – of the building can be salvaged.”
He added he would provide further updates when he had them.
