Levelling-up, football regulator and Commonwealth Games - MP Nigel Huddleston's Westminster Diary

Droitwich Editorial 29th Apr, 2022   0

Mid Worcestershire MP Nigel Huddleston writes for the Standard.

SINCE MY last diary column, I am able to share the good news that Wychavon District Council has been allocated nearly £4million from the UK’s Shared Prosperity Fund,.

This is an important pot of money for levelling-up the more deprived communities by investing in people and places, support for businesses and investment in skills. It is something positive for our area and will be delivered by the council which is focused on local priorities.

Many people made extraordinary sacrifices during the pandemic and are understandably angry by the issue of gatherings at no 10. It is of course a serious matter to receive a Fixed Penalty Notice and the Prime Minister and the Chancellor have both made sincere apologies.

I can assure constituents the Government remains focused on delivering on the priorities of the British people and dealing with issues such as the Ukraine crisis and the cost of living.

We have also been busy in Parliament initiating legislation relating to online harms in order to make Britain the safest place in the world to be on the Internet, as well as progressing the Health and Care Bill, Building Safety Bill and Nationality and Borders Bill.

I have also been progressing the fan led review of football – an issue close the hearts of many sport fans in the constituency – and I announced we will be introducing legislation to bring in an independent regulator of football.

It is now less than 100 days to go until the start of Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Tickets are back on sale, and I hope many people from our area will be able to attend some of the sporting events in person as we return to the kind of major events that really bring communities together.

I have also been pleased to welcome students to the Houses of Parliament from St Barnabas School and Droitwich Spa High School recently.

They had a tour around the Palace of Westminster, and we also had an interesting discussion about the role of MPs and how Parliament works.

Tours are also open to members of the public in general and other types of community groups, not just schools.

If you would like to make arrangements for a visit and tour please feel free to contact my office.
