WORCESTERSHIRE Libraries are seeking young volunteers for this years Summer Reading Challenge.

The Summer Reading Challenge is a partnership between The Reading Agency and local libraries which promotes reading among children aged between 4 and 11 during the summer holidays.

Locals between the ages of 13 and 24 are encouraged to volunteer a minimum of five hours of their time to assist library and learning staff with the project.

The first key role available for volunteers include a general role of helping libraries prepare by designing and putting up displays, book collection, participation registration, discussing reading choices with participants, selecting new books, distributing stickers and incentives and other administrative responsibilities.

The second key role calls for book specialists to develop and maintain well stocked displays using library resources, creating a ‘Who Writes Like’ display, providing book recommendations, liaising with library staff for their recommendations and encouraging participants to find pleasure in reading.

Finally event planners will develop and oversee competitions and events and helping to facilitate special activities to encourage participation in the challenge.

At the end of the programme, each volunteer will be presented with a certificate of participation as a token of appreciation for their commitment.

There are also a host of other voluntary roles available for people to help out in the Summer Reading Challenge.

Coun Marcus Hart, cabinet member for communities at Worcestershire County Council said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is always popular with our younger readers here in Worcestershire and I’m sure this year will be no exception.

“By joining as a volunteer, you have the power to make a real difference in the lives of children and ignite their love for books.

“Your involvement will create cherished memories, forge new friendships, and empower the next generation through the magic of reading.”
