Love is in the air - St Richard's to hold virtual Valentine's Day balloon race fund-raiser

ST RICHARD’S Hospice is inviting local people to support its care this Valentine’s Day by sponsoring a heart-shaped balloon to take part in a virtual race.

The online fund-raiser comes at a challenging time for the Worcestershire hospice with charity shops temporarily closed and many fundraising events postponed.

Bought for £4.50, each heart-shaped balloon can be customised with a name and message for someone special. Each balloon could also fund a delicious afternoon tea for a hospice patient to enjoy in the charity’s In-patient unit or delivered to their home.

The race will last seven days from Sunday, February 14, over the half term week, with the winning balloon being the one that has flown the furthest. Those taking part can track their balloon online. As it is a virtual competition, there is no impact on the environment or risk to wildlife.

Prizes up for grabs include afternoon tea for two from Centenary Lounge, in Worcester, and a balloon display from Worcester-based Something Party. Both local businesses have kindly donated prizes to support the hospice.

Jayne Sargeant, St Richard’s Hospice Fundraiser, said: “We know it’s been a tough start to 2021 for many so we thought this might be a bit of fun for those staying home at the moment while helping us spread a little love too.

“A heart-shaped balloon is the perfect alternative to a Valentine’s Day card, to show your love for a hardworking home-schooler or in memory of someone special. We hope local supporters will take part and in turn help us show our love for patients and their families this February.”

More details about the virtual balloon race are available on the St Richard’s Hospice website at www.strichards.org.uk/event/valentines-balloon-race

The balloons will be released at midday on Sunday, February 14 and race until February 21. Entries close at midday on Friday (February 12)
