More banking misery as Halifax announces its Droitwich branch will close in July

HALIFAX in Droitwich is set to close its doors following a series of nationwide cut-backs.

The St Andrew’s Street branch will close on July 20 this year as part of a three-year programme which will see nearly 400 branches close across the country.

Bosses revealed the Droitwich branch of Halifax, which is part of the Lloyds Banking Group, has 56 per cent less customers than a typical branch.

In an online statement, Halifax said: “We have made the difficult decision to close this branch because of the changing way customers choose to bank with us, which has resulted in customers using it less often.

“You can continue to use any other Halifax branch and the nearest alternative branch is the Bromsgrove branch.

“The local post office is also a short distance away, where you can manage your day-to-day banking.”

The closure is the latest blow to the high street after it was announced the closure of Natwest in June.

Rob MacGregor, national officer the Unite trade union, said: “The continuous stream of branch closures announced by the UK’s retail bank branches appears to show no signs of ending.

“Lloyds Banking Group’s rationale for branch closures is the claimed customer preference towards the use of technology across banking.

“However, this simply doesn’t ring true when it’s clear that many customers still value the face to face engagement with experienced and knowledgeable bank staff.
