New bins to be installed to reduce rubbish dumping on Droitwich's A38

NEW bins will be lining the A38 to help encourage more drivers to dispose of their rubbish correctly.

It is hoped that the new bins will not just tidy the area but also assist the Droitwich Spa Litter Squad, who usually go down the A38 embankments to collect rubbish.

Clive Sheerman, the founder of the Droitwich Spa Litter Squad, said: “The bins are a massive help to us and the town.

“The vast number of lorry drivers are responsible and use the bins and sometimes bag rubbish up and leave them next to the bins for us to collect.”

Clive estimated that 3,000 bags of rubbish had been collected from the A38 since the group was formed in 2018.

A survey by Keep Britain Tidy found laybys with bins were more badly littered than those without, which initially influenced the council’s decision not to install layby bins.

However, positive feedback from the Litter Squad led to the new recent developments.

Sharon Casswell, Head of Client Services for Wychavon District Council, said: “We’re pleased to confirm that we have been out to survey the sites for the new bins along the A38 and on the Berryhill Industrial Estate.

“They have been ordered and should be installed by mid-October.

“We’re grateful to all our litter picking volunteers, including members of Droitwich Litter Squad, for the effort they put into supporting our street cleaning to keep our district looking clean and tidy.”
