New book details 'historical nuggets' from Droitwich's storied past

THE town’s history and archaeology society are delighted to be releasing their new book archiving historical ‘nuggets’ of the town’s development, industrial past and building heritage.

The Droitwich History & Archaeology Society’s book – A Droitwich Miscellany – collates historical resources into a detailed look at the town’s storied past.

Chris Bowers, the Chair of the Droitwich History & Archaeology Society said: “There was a great danger that the many articles and personal stories contributed by society members in the past would have been lost, but with our new book, these stories and articles can be shared with everyone.

“I am delighted that the project has to come fruition through the skill and dedication of our members.”

Between 1984 and 2015, the society produced a regular newsletter twice a year, with the first edition produced just after the society formed.

The newsletters contained a wealth of information including detailed notes from the first lectures, archaeological reports, articles from nineteenth century newspaper articles and reports, stories about local people and the memories of people who lived in Droitwich.

The society also developed their own research projects including the Salwarpe project, a local census survey of 1851, and the Dodderhill project (which later evolved into the Historic Droitwich project).

The books proof-reader, Alan Baker added: “The book will obviously be of great interest to many local people who will welcome having such a fascinating resource readily to hand.

“In particular, the collection will be welcomed by the many hundreds of new residents to our town, providing them with an interesting introduction to a wide sweep of the town’s history.

“It will be a valuable resource for many of the town’s young people, helping them to a fuller appreciation of their local inheritance.”

Local historians, Helen and Roger Peberdy said: “This book is an eclectic collection which will be of interest to both former and present residents.

“It gives a varied picture of life in Droitwich with short snappy articles, which are both interesting and varied.”
