THE DROITWICH Community Pantry and Fridge has officially opened its new larger premises on the Berry Hill Industrial Estate.

It marks an exciting new chapter for the charity as it continues to tackle food waste and support families across Worcestershire.

The new unit was formally opened by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Worcestershire, Beatrice Grant, last Friday.

Among the guests including the MP for Droitwich and Evesham, Nigel Huddleston, the Mayor of Droitwich, Coun Chris Bowden, local supporters and volunteers.

The Pantry and Fridge, which was co-founded by Ashlea and Sarah Stone, is run entirely by volunteers. It redistributes around 5tonnes of surplus food each week across the Midlands and delivers more than 140 food parcels across the county.

Families can access food for just £5 per shop or it is sometimes free – for those who are vulnerable or struggling.

The charity also provides cages of food to local schools to help support families in need.

Funding boost

The move to the new site was made possible thanks to a £19,000 grant from the National Lottery Community Fund. The cash enabled the charity to increase capacity and improve its services for members and volunteers alike.

Ashlea said: “We’re so grateful to our amazing volunteers who give their time and effort to keep the Pantry running – we simply couldn’t operate without them.

“We’re also incredibly thankful to everyone who supports us, from those who use the Pantry to the schools, organisations and other charities we work with across the community.”

Mr Huddleston said: “The Droitwich Community Pantry and Fridge is a brilliant example of local people coming together to help one another.

“Their work tackling food waste while supporting families in need is truly fantastic.

“It was a pleasure to join the Lord-Lieutenant, the volunteers, and the local community to celebrate their fantastic new premises.”

Zoe Fletcher, charity coordinator, added: “The move to Berry Hill means we can help more people, store more food safely, and work with even more local partners.

“We’re very thankful for the National Lottery Community Fund’s support, which has made this possible.”

The Droitwich Community Pantry and Fridge works closely with partners including Mindful Chef and Oakland International, which help provide surplus stock and logistical support to keep the service running.
