New 'eco' bike shelter in Droitwich Lido Park to encourage cycling and help wildlife flourish

A NEW ‘eco’ bike shelter has been installed in Droitwich’s Lido Park as part of Wychavon District Council’s commitment to improving green spaces and cycling routes in the town.

The shelter, made from recycled and sustainable materials, enhances the environment for both people and animals, helping wildlife to flourish in a nectar-rich habitat.

The roof is covered with native wildflowers which will grow and bloom over the coming months and the habitat panels on the side provide a perfect home for bugs. There is also a nesting box at the back for birds.

The shelter has space to store six bikes on secure stands which allow cyclists to lock both the wheels and frame to ensure peace of mind.

It was designed and built by the award-winning Green Roof Shelters and funded using money linked to planning agreements, known as section 106 funding.

Wychavon plans to install another ‘eco’ bike shelter in Vines Park, which will have a bike repair stand too.

Coun Tony Rowley, Wychavon District Council’s Executive Board Member for Climate Change, Environmental Policy and Regulatory Services, said: “Cycling is a great, healthy way to get around Wychavon and we hope this new ‘eco’ bike shelter will see plenty of use.”

Coun George Duffy, who represents Droitwich Spa West on Wychavon District Council, said: “As a keen cyclist, I think this is a brilliant idea.

“It’s safe, fun and good for the environment too – a great addition to Lido Park.”
