New exhibition based on the History and Restoration of 31 High Street now open

A NEW exhibition based on the ‘History and Restoration’ of 31 High Street has opened at St Andrew’s Church.

31 High Street in Droitwich is being restored to its original 1400s appearance but is currently covered with boards and scaffolding.

Residents, including the building’s former owner Michael Wood, have been peering through a wooden window, allowing them to see the restoration work in progress.

The exhibition, which runs until September 30, has been co-ordinated and organised by the Historic Droitwich and Dodderhill Research Group (HDDRG) and is aimed at giving the public an insight into the historic building.

HDDRG member Chris Bowers, said: “The exhibition will feature the solar wing of the medieval open hall house.

“It will also include architects’ drawings and photographs of the restoration by Spitlath Building Conservation, with historic documentary and earlier photographs of the building.”

Members of HDDRG have undertaken a Heritage Lottery supported project identifying a number of the oldest timber framed buildings in the High Street and Friar Street.

Paul Jones, a local historian and photographer, has kept a photo diary of the restoration of the medieval timber framed solar wing and his work can be seen at the exhibition.

He said it was a privilege to be part of the project and thanked Splitlath’s Andrew Morris who had permitted continual access to the site.

“I can clearly recall Stephen’s Gift Shop which once occupied the premises, and never imagined that over 30 years later I would see such a complete restoration of this gem of a building.”
