New Historic Droitwich website to be lauched at town's library tomorrow

Droitwich Editorial 24th Mar, 2017   0

THE NEW website of the Historic Droitwich: It’s Streets and People Project will be officially launched in the town at 10am tomorrow (Saturday).

An illustrated talk on Captain Coningsby Norbury RN 1679 to 1734 will be given by John Holden at the event which will take place at the Droitwich Library.

Following that Lyn Blewitt will officially unveil the website which features many aspects of the history research undertaken by members of the Droitwich and Dodderhill History Research Group. The new website will detail the findings of the project which is due to end on Friday (March 31).

The organisation secured a £35,000 Heritage Lottery Grant for the project which began in October 2013.

Since then, researchers and transcribers have been looking into the documentary evidence of the properties and people living in the historic core of the town centre – the High Street and Friar Street.

Experts have undertaken detailed scientific and analytical study of a number of timber-framed properties along with a study of archaeological work undertaken in Droitwich over many years.

Last week we reported how dendrochronological (tree-ring) dating had revealed one building on the High Street – Hereford House at number 24 – had revealed a rare type of medieval house going back to 1455. And it is thought to be the only one in the whole county.

Although the project ends next Friday, the group is aware more research could be undertaken in the future and new areas of historic building and people research has already been identified.

It is hoped, in due course, new Heritage Lottery Funding, will be secured to pursue those lines of enquiry.
