THE BRAND NEW Wychbold Sports and Social Club opened its doors for the first time on Friday, writes Katie Bowen.

The project, which began back in April, involved several residents putting time, money and effort into the previously tired building to reopen it for the villagers, after it suddenly closed its doors in April.

There was a fantastic reception from the local community, giving the new venture a great kick start.

There was plenty of praise for the makeover and the building now offers modern, spacious lounge and function room, as well as a smaller bar area and rejuvenated snooker room.

Hundreds of residents over the course of the weekend packed into the new social club to see the transformation and enjoyed the refreshments available.

Gary Bowen, spokesperson for the group of villagers who took the venue over, said “We were all apprehensive prior to opening on Friday evening, however our nerves were soon allayed when villagers were queuing to get in.”

Mr Bowen added the group was extremely proud of its hard work, adding they were all looking forward to villagers being able to enjoy the new club.

The club is also looking forward to welcoming back the successful snooker team and bingo club which enabled residents to socialise together.

The new club will also be the meeting point for the many football teams Wychbold boasts and already new community groups are looking to take up residence in the building.
