New plaque to be unveiled at Droitwich's ceramic mural

MORE light will be shed on the buildings depicted in Droitwich’s ceramic mural at 4pm next Friday, October 11, when a special information plaque is unveiled.

The plaque next to ‘Buildings of Droitwich’ in St Andrew’s Shopping Centre will identify the buildings on the mural and map their locations.

The mural uses hundreds of profiled ceramic tiles so every building, window and door can be traced by hand and can be enjoyed by poorly sighted people.

A QR code system is also planned where people, by scanning with an iPhone or tablet, can listen to an audio description of what the mural is about.

The much-loved mural, created and installed in 1976 by Philippa Threlfall and her husband Kennedy Collings, has adorned the wall of what is now ‘Café Morso’ for the past 43 years.

It fell into a state of disrepair and, after Droitwich Arts Network led a campaign for its restoration, work was carried out by Philippa and her son Daniel Collings who own the ‘Black Dog of Wells’ company.

The restored mural was unveiled back in May.
