A ‘SUSTAINABLE and prosperous future’ for Worcester City is at the heart of an ambitious scheme for a landmark sport and leisure development in Fernhill Heath.
Dubbed the ‘Worcestershire Community Sports Park’, City’s owner Simon Lancaster has revealed his hope the site will include a stadium fit for the National League North or South – three divisions above the club’s current level.
If approved, the stadium would be City’s first permanent home since leaving the iconic St George’s Lane in 2013 to begin a nomadic existence which has included games in Kidderminster and Bromsgrove before returning home in an agreement with the Worcestershire FA to use Claines Lane.
It would also mean City technically leaving Worcester as Fernhill Health lies in Wychavon district much like Sixways, the current home of Worcester Raiders and former home of the folded Worcester Warriors.
The club, in partnership with Marsten Developments, hailed the move as a ‘significant milestone’ in the development of a multi-faceted, community sports and leisure site in the heart of Worcestershire
The proposed Worcestershire Community Sports Park off Hurst Lane represents a comprehensive vision of sports and leisure offering, designed to enrich the lives of residents and visitors alike.
Key features of this ambitious project include a state-of-the-art football pitch, a cricket pitch, an ultra-modern community building, housing options, retirement living facilities, and a range of other amenities.
Simon Lancaster, owner of Worcester City Football Club said: “Worcester City Football Club has a rich history dating back to 1902. We envisage an integrated future at the core of the Worcestershire Community Sports Park.
“This central hub is designed to accommodate the club’s 22 existing teams and foster growth at all levels.
“The project addresses the void left since the club’s departure from St George’s Lane in 2013, with the aspiration to meet National League North/South standards and secure a sustainable and prosperous future.
“This proposal underscores a strong commitment to Worcester’s heritage, fans and the broader community. It embodies the club’s forward-thinking spirit.”
Stennard Harrison, managing director of Marsten Developments said: “Our master plan prioritises sustainability, incorporating green infrastructure and connection with pedestrian, cycle and public transport routes.
“It proposes a mix of sports pitches, green amenity, eco homes and extra care facilities.
“It also includes a cricket pitch, community building, and very importantly, a new permanent home for Worcester City Football Club.”
Members of the public will be invited to attend a public consultation and exhibition in January.
