New transport scheme to help Droitwich residents get to hospital and GP appointments

Droitwich Editorial 15th Oct, 2017   0

A NEW transport scheme has been launched to help people in Droitwich who are unable to travel to hospital appointments.

Community Transport Connections provides transport for county residents who need to get to either the Alexandra or Worcestershire Royal Hospitals, but have no access to or difficulty in using any other form of transport.

The pilot community project is delivered in partnership by the county’s existing Community Transport (CT) operators, funded by the Department for Transport’s Total Transport scheme and is supported by Worcestershire County Council and healthcare providers.

Droitwich Spa and Rural Council for Voluntary Service is also leading leading the county’s other CT schemes in Pershore, Redditch, Evesham and Worcester.

Coun Alan Amos, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Highways, said: “It is hugely important transport options are available for people who need to get to their local GP or hospital.

“We are delighted to be able to work in partnership with health services and community transport groups to provide this pilot scheme that will allow people to get to a variety of healthcare settings quickly and safely.”

This service is provided by volunteers who give their time to support and assist people within their communities.

Simon Trickett, accountable officer for three Worcestershire CCGs, said: “We’re pleased this transport scheme is now in place to offer local residents improved access to healthcare services.

“During work to reconfigure acute hospital services in the county, lots of people told us how they struggle to get to the different hospital sites.

“The transport options available were reviewed and hopefully this new service will help to strengthen local transport links.

“This scheme will offer an individual, patient focused service supporting those who are unable to travel to do so.”

Residents will need to register for the service and pre-book their journeys a minimum of 48 hours in advance.

Fares and eligibility criteria apply for this service, so people need to ask for further details.

Anyone who can volunteer on the scheme, either in administration or as a driver should call 0300 3239965. Training is provided and expenses are paid.

The Booking Line 0300 3239965 is open Monday to Friday between 9am and 4pm or email ctconnections.org.uk for more information.
