NIGEL HUDDLESTON- 'Profound sorrow over Middle East conflict'

I’M SURE constituents will want to join me in expressing their profound sorrow following the recent events we have witnessed in the Middle East.

The terrorist atrocities carried out by Hamas shocked us all. I extend my most sincere condolences to all those who have lost loved ones, in particular the relatives of British nationals who so sadly lost their lives.

The UK stands firmly with Israel in the face of Hamas’ terrorism.

The conflict has already taken far too many lives, and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is worsening.

I therefore welcomed the announcement that the UK will be providing an additional £20million of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza – more than doubling our previous support to the Palestinian people.

Travelling to the Middle East last week, the Prime Minister met various political leaders – including in Israel, Palestine and Egypt – furthering our diplomatic efforts to deliver much-needed aid, prevent the spread of conflict and stressing the need to act in accordance with international humanitarian law.

Whilst our focus has quite rightly been on the situation in Israel and Gaza, the work of MPs and Ministers has continued throughout.

As the Minister for International Trade, I recently travelled to Colombia and Peru as part of a multi-state visit in order to resolve trade barriers.

The Latin America region poses an exciting opportunity for UK businesses to build on our £40billion trading relationship, as its economies continue to open up and grow.

These discussions were a positive step forward as we look to cut red-tape and unlock market access in the region.

Meanwhile, I have also welcomed significant Government investment in Mid Worcestershire and the surrounding area.

As well as the return of funded training places at the Three Counties Medical School in Worcester – something which MPs from across Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire have long campaigned for, I was pleased the Midlands will receive £9.6billion as part of Network North.

The Government’s support for the Midlands Rail Hub will have real benefits for stations such as Droitwich and Worcestershire Parkway, as well as for my constituents more broadly.

I have been a keen supporter of the rail hub and recently visited Worcestershire Parkway to discuss the proposals, hence I am delighted to see the plans come to life.

Finally, I know many residents have been concerned about flooding in light of the significant rainfall we have seen over the last week.

I have been monitoring the situation closely and advise constituents to keep up-to-date with flood risks in their area.

As always, if you have specific concerns then please do contact my office at [email protected] .
