THE dog who recently starred in Annie at the Norbury Theatre is in need of surgery after breaking his ankle in three places.

Bertie the dog had a ‘freak accident’ while walking around Witley Court with his owner Rachel Checketts last weekend.

Rachel has set up a Just Giving page in hope of raising the £10,000 needed for Bertie’s operation.

She said: “Because of the severity of the break Bertie requires specialist surgery at Willows Veterinary Hospital in Solihull.

“The vet there has been amazing so far and will hopefully operate by next Wednesday.

“It is Bertie’s only real hope of a decent recovery.”

Around £4,000 of the bill will be paid by pet insurance, according to Rachel.

“We are heartbroken – I cannot believe we have gone from such amazing highs of Bertie performing as Sandy in Annie to such a sad, painful and worrying low.

“I am truly sorry to ask strangers for help but I’m taking the advice and encouragement that I have been given.

“Bertie means the world to his family and friends and brings joy to everyone he meets.”
