THE BROMSGROVE-based Mercian Nordic Walkers are hoping to get more adults from the town and Droitwich active after research showed some between the ages of 40 and 60 do less than ten minutes walking per month.
Public Health England published research this week claiming ten minutes of brisk walking per day could reduce the risk of early death by as much as 15 per cent.
It also claims increased activity could reduces the risk of future health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, weight issues, depression and anxiety and musculo-skeletal problems such as lower back pain.
Ian Northcott BEM, the owner of Mercian Nordic Walking Ltd, said: “Walking is a simple way to get fit and if you use our special Nordic walking poles you get an upper body workout too.
“My mission is to get Bromsgrove, Droitwich and Redditch moving to promote health and wellbeing in the great outdoors.
“With our subsidised courses in September and October this is your chance to experience Nordic Walking and get fit”
Public Health England has also released an app called ‘Active 10’ designed to encourage people to walk briskly for ten minutes every day by simply walking faster than usual, offering it as an alternative to gym memberships and other more intense activities.
