Number of apprenticeships rockets across Worcestershire

THE number of apprenticeships started in Worcestershire in the past year has rocketed, new figures reveal.

Between August 2016 and April this year, 5,080 apprentices started their new roles in the county and that figure is expected to climb even further.

Worcestershire County Council is hoping the apprentice starter figures will be higher than 5,390 when the data for April to July this year is published.

The county’s figure is six per cent above the West Midlands average of 88.8 per cent, and eight per cent above the figure for the whole of England which is 86.2 per cent.

The most popular apprenticeships in Worcestershire are in construction, engineering and ICT.

Coun Marcus Hart, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Education and Skills, said: “Apprenticeship schemes are something that we champion here in Worcestershire.

“I’m pleased that so many young people have been given an opportunity to get into the world of work.

“We have some very talented youngsters in Worcestershire that will positively contribute to our economy and we want them to carry on working in Worcestershire in the future.”

Gary Woodman, Chief Executive of Worcestershire LEP, said: “A key part of delivering the Strategic Economic Plan for Worcestershire is driving up the skills and employability of the working age population.

“These figures are fantastic news and show that there is no better way to recruit and train young people, where they can earn and learn at the same time. The fact that Worcestershire has been able to maintain a high level of engagement with the apprenticeship programme across all sectors allows the economy to continue to grow at one of the fastest rates in England.”
