Odds of Droitwich getting a white Christmas this year are revealed

Droitwich Editorial 19th Dec, 2023   0

EVERYONE loves a white Christmas and, let’s face it, it does not really feel very festive when it does not snow on Christmas Day.

But, statistically, the odds are against most of the UK getting snow on Christmas Day.

The last proper white Christmas in the UK was 2010 when it was the coldest December in 100 years. Here in the Midlands, we had weeks of snow with frequent fresh falls. In that year 83 per cent of weather stations recorded snow on the ground on December 25 – the highest ever recorded by the Met Office.

In 2017 we ‘technically’ had a white Christmas but – on that occasion – just 11 per cent of stations recorded snow on the ground.

Last year was particularly disappointing with temperatures almost touching double figures on Christmas Day across the Midlands.

So what are the chances of snow in Worcestershire on Christmas Day this year?

Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day all have a 33/1 chance of snow in Worcestershire – just a three per cent chance.

On New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day it will be slightly better but still long odds of 24/1.

Snow at anytime between December 22 and January 3 is still only 33/3, which equates to an 19 per cent chance.
