Ombersley student receives £1,000 scholarship for academic success

A STUDENT from Droitwich has shared her delight after being recognised by her university for outstanding academic achievements.

Imogen Stanley was rewarded with a £1,000 scholarship for her achievements at the University of Worcester.

The awards recognised the students’ achievements throughout the 2023/24 academic year.

Imogen, from Ombersley, said: “I feel incredibly proud of myself as I never would have imagined myself being awarded a prize such as this.

“The award has also boosted my confidence in myself significantly; this has increased my self-belief, which will therefore ensure I practise to the best of my ability throughout my career.”

Imogen, who is in the third year of a Social Work degree, said she had ironically always found academic work challenging. She was diagnosed with dyslexia at the beginning of her course.

She added: “Since my diagnosis, I have become more patient with myself.

“I am more accepting of the fact that it takes me longer to write an assignment, and luckily the hard work has paid off so far.

“I have accepted that dyslexia is a part of me now; it does not define me, but without it, I wouldn’t be me.

“I guess this just goes to show that dyslexia does not mean you’re incapable, or that you cannot succeed in life, it just means you’re a little different, and I like being different.”

Imogen said a key reason that she chose to come to Worcester was her experience at interview. She praised her interviewer for being patient and understanding of her dyslexia and feels she made the right choice of unversity.

Though the degree had been tough, she says she had always had the support of her fellow students and from the university lecturers, particularly her personal academic tutor.

She says she has ‘learned so much from studying in Worcester’, skills which will stay with her forever.

She added: “I understand myself so much more now, and I am more accepting of my flaws, I finally have a love for myself and my achievements.”

University of Worcester Provost, Ann Jordan, explained how proud the educational establishment is of the students who have earned the academic scholarship prize.

Ann Jordan added: “These students achieved highly in their studies and their commitment and hard work is something to be recognised and celebrated.

“We hope this award will inspire them to further academic success in their future studies.

“We are very grateful to all our benefactors, whose generosity makes such a difference to our students.”

The scholarships and prizes are supported by generous philanthropists including the University’s distinguished Honorary Fellows, local employers, and many successful graduates of the University.
