OPERA Worcester stars will take to the stage once again with its glittering production of The Merry Widow.

After celebrating its 70th anniversary last year and following three difficult years because of the pandemic, the much-loved Worcester group will grace the stage at the Norbury Theatre in Droitwich .

This production is set in the glamourous 1930’s, under the direction of a new team, professional actor and director Anthony Ravenhall and music director, Richard Jenkinson a professional musician.

A professional string quartet will also be onstage. Music includes the stunningly beautiful ‘Vilia’ and ‘Merry Widow Waltz’.

The singers of Opera Worcester are well established and known within the City of Worcester, but are particularly proud of the nurturing and opening the doors to aspiring younger singers and talent.

Opera Worcester is delighted that two fresh faces have joined the company. Maddie Kirby a professional harpist and Katie Downes who joined Opera Worcester in her gap year before going onto Royal Holloway University to read drama and theatre studies.

Maddie said: “I joined Opera Worcester a year ago and it really was the best decision! I’d been looking for groups to join to gain more stage experience and was really lucky to find Opera Worcester.

“It’s such a welcoming group of lovely people and rehearsals are always a blast and I’ve even been cast a role in their upcoming production of Merry Widow.”

Katie added: “I have really enjoyed being a part of the Opera Worcester society. The varied ages have meant I felt very comfortable even as a younger member and both the calibre of musical talent and the hospitality have helped me learn a lot about the theatrical world. It is so warming to be a part of something so genuine and passionate.’

Secretary Caroline Causier said: “The company is delighted to have Katie and Maddie on board and always welcome new members.”

The company are not only performing The Merry Widow in February but will soon be in rehearsal for a charity concert ‘Sing into Spring’ at Kempsey Parish Church on April 15.

The Merry Widow is being performed at The Norbury Theatre, Droitwich next week.
