Oscar Saxelby-Lee walk from Worcester Royal to the QE to raise stem cell awareness

A SPONSORED walk is taking place for five-year old Oscar Saxelby-Lee from Worcester who has been fighting leukaemia since December 2018.

A stem cell match was found for Oscar after an appeal was made to find a donor and about 5,000 people queued to join the donor register.

He is currently undergoing a stem cell transplant treatment at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

The sponsored event will begin at Worcester Royal Hospital and participants will walk 27 miles to Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital.

It will take place on September 21, coinciding with World Bone Marrow Donor Day.

Allah Ditta, the Mayor of Worcester, will be opening the event.

The challenge will begin at 7am at Worcester’s Hospital and will follow the canal to Alvechurch Fisheries where long distance walkers will be joined at 2pm by those doing a more family friendly ten-mile walk.

All participants will make their way to the finish line at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital together.

The goal is to raise money and awareness of DKMS and Anthony Nolan, two vital charities that helped Oscar find the blood stem cell donor he needed to survive.

The walk has been organised by five parents of children in Oscar’s year at Pitmaston Primary School and their friends.

Over 50 walkers have signed up to take part, and organisers say they would like it to feel like a day walking with friends and supporting one another along the way.

Entry for both distances is £5 and any sponsorship money will be donated to the two stem cell charities DKMS and Anthony Nolan.

Kath Nesbitt from Bromsgrove is one of the people participating in the walk.

She said: “I think it’s an incredible way of raising awareness for something that is so important.

“The statistics that only two per cent of the UK population is on the stem cell register is not good enough and needs to change.

“It is such an easy process.

“Everyone should do it and it could make a real difference to someone’s life.”

There will also be two stem cell donor registration events at Alvechurch Fisheries 11am to 4pm for people aged 17 to 55 and at Queen Elizabeth Hospital 12pm – 5pm for people aged 16 to 30.
