Parish and town councils to receive funding to host VE Day 80 celebrations across Wychavon

TOWN and parish councils across Wychavon will be supported through funding to host celebrations of a significant upcoming milestone in the nation’s history.

Councils across the district will be contacted directly over the coming weeks about how they can claim £250 to join communities nationwide by marking VE Day 80 (May 8).

As well as the dedicated fund, Wychavon is scrapping fees for road closure notices for anyone holding a street party on May 5, May 8, or over the weekend (May 9 to 11).

Wychavon will join the nation in raising the VE Day 80 flag at 9am on May 8. Churches are asked to ring bells at 6.30pm and communities are invited to light a beacon at 9.30pm.

At the same time, Chelsea Pensioner Colin Thackery will lead the nation in a rendition of I Vow To Thee My Country.

Residents are also urged to support their local fish and chip shop in tribute to the courageous fishermen who braved the German U-boats and the farmers and Land Girls who cultivated the fields to keep the country fed.

Wychavon’s deputy leader, councillor Aaron Powell shared his delight at being able to support the community financially for this ‘important anniversary of remembrance.’

Councillor Rob Adams, Wychavon’s Armed Forces Champion, added: “VE Day 80 is an opportunity to ensure the sacrifices and triumphs of those who fought and lived through the Second World War are honoured and remembered, while reminding us of the resilience, unity, and peace that emerged from the conflict.

“We encourage everyone to come together to reflect, celebrate, and pay tribute to those who secured our freedom.”
