A POPULAR Droitwich pub is offering local foodies the chance to enjoy a taste of Canada with a special pie as part of a Worldwide project aimed at embracing different flavours.

The Gardeners Arms started up the ‘Twin Town Pie Makers’ concept which will see a different pie from around the World added to the menu each month, starting today (Friday).

In exchange, the Vines Lane pub will be offering the recipe for its famous Droitwich pie which boasts pulled pork, chicken and bacon in chive cider Worcestershire Sauce gravy.

The first to join in with the flavour journey will be Canadian pie company Saltchuck with its recipe for braised rabbit cooked with spring vegetables in a creamy Dijon mustard sauce, wrapped in shortcrust pastry.

It will be served at the pub’s King John’s Kitchen Restaurant with rustic fries or mash potatoes, seasonal vegetables and a thick rich gravy.

Based in Victoria, Vancouver, Saltchuck specialises in hot, savoury pies, made in the Australian and New Zealand tradition using fresh local ingredients.

Landlord Simon Berry, said: “There are ‘twin town’ concepts around the World, so I came up with the pie exchange in order to put the historic town of Droitwich Spa on the map and make people aware of different pies.

“I have been in contact with a number of companies around the World including ones in Scandinavia, America, Italy and Australia.

“Saltchuck is the first to take it on – which will be featured on the menu from today – and we hope to continue on a monthly basis.

“I think the name Saltchuck really resonates with the town of Droitwich and its salt heritage.”

Simon said he hoped the concept would help build relationships with other companies and bring other cultures to the pub.

“We are always looking to bring tourism into the area and it will be great to embrace other cultures from across the world,” he added.

“Residents have always been very supportive of our ideas and our pies are always well received, we can’t wait for people to try them.”

The first pie, using the recipe from Canadian company Saltchuck, will be available to try at The Gardener’s Arms from today (Friday).
