Planning application for Fernhill Heath sports park expected ‘later this year’

A PLANNING application for Worcester City’s proposed new ground in Fernhill Heath is expected to be submitted later this year, owner Simon Lancaster has told the Standard.

Subject to planning permission being granted, Worcester would have a new permanent home in Fernhill Heath, named Worcestershire Community Sports Park, and the area would be transformed into a sports and leisure hub.

A public consultation on the sports park took place earlier this year and plans are being amended and finalised to factor in the feedback received.

In addition to a ‘state-of-the-art’ football pitch with seating for more than 565 spectators and terracing for 660 fans there will also be a cricket pitch.

Some 200 to 250 energy efficient, affordable and ecological homes, an ultra-modern community building and retirement living also form part of the ambitious plans.

The masterplan prioritises sustainability and green infrastructure as access routes connect with existing pedestrian, cycle and public transport networks.

Environmental green buffers, sustainable infrastructure and strategic site zoning, mitigate visual impacts on the surrounding area.

Most of the access by road will be off Hurst Lane with a separate access on Hindlip Lane. It’s hoped such a proposal will reduce traffic congestion.

The proposed new community building envisages a four court sports hall, MP Studio, dance hall and cafe.

If approved, the stadium would be City’s first permanent home since leaving the iconic St George’s Lane in 2013.
