Plans for Droitwich to hold its own Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration

PLANS have been put forward for Droitwich to have its own Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration next year.

A motion was put forward at Monday’s Droitwich Town Council meeting by Coun Alan Humphries.

It was seconded by by Coun Alex Sinton and was voted through unanimously.

Events are held on January 27 each year to remember the atrocity and the 6million Jews murdered at the hands of the Nazis.

Commemorations also remember the genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.

While this year’s is too soon to organise an event, several members of the town council said they would be attending the countywide one in Worcester this year.

Droitwich is currently one of the few areas locally not to hold a commemoration to mark the day.

As well as Worcester, Bromsgrove and Redditch hold events every year and invite local schoolchildren and other members of the community to get involved.

A Droitwich Town Council group will now discuss what form the 2024 commemoration will take and where it will be held.
